The learning which is the subject of this journal might be formal or informal, might occur in schools, post-compulsory settings, organisations (such as businesses, community groups, orchestras, art galleries or museums), other communities of place, regions or in other communities of practice such as professional associations and virtual or online communities. Learning communities can be large or small groups of people, who learn together, often in pursuit of a common purpose. This journal occupies a unique place in international publications by reporting research, makes research-to-practice connections, and examines the intersection of learning with the social contexts in which the learning occurs. We strive towards the publication of high-quality articles through the engagement of expert referees in a double-blind peer review process. Writing Spaces is published in partnership with Parlor Press and WAC Clearinghouse.The Learning Communities: International Journal of Learning in Social Contexts aims to publish articles which advance our knowledge and understanding of social contexts in Australia and internationally with an emphasis on the socio-cultural dimensions of learning in these different contexts and configurations.

These experiences reinforce the fact that effective communication requires contextual awareness and that understanding social norms is essential for developing that awareness. They cover topics including learning a “hidden” lexicon, building confidence and independence, and navigating tacit power hierarchies. Xu and Chen then offer examples of how people become competent communicators within the context of new new-to-them scientific discourse communities. We use the social media platform TikTok as an extended example as we explore the various criteria that define a discourse community. We offer readers a framework for understanding how the social assumptions associated with familiar communicative contexts may be useful in understanding new or unfamiliar contexts. This is an invitation for readers to think about the fact that academic communication practices are structured in ways that are actually quite similar to the more familiar communication practices they use on a daily basis. In doing so, we illustrate why it is necessary to examine the social side of communication. We begin with a discussion of a key concept: the discourse community.
